Real Simple: What’s one trend you would like to see more of this summer?
Brad Goreski: I would like to see more polished dressing, to be honest. There’s a bit of a return to Audrey Hepburn-esque dressing—ladylike colors and prints a la Roman Holiday.

RS: What’s your must-have item for the summer?
BG: Millennial pink: that nice, romantic, ladylike color—and all of the different ways that you can wear it. I think that it’s a color that a lot of people stood back from for a while, and I think it’s nice that it’s being embraced now—it looks so pretty out there in the world.

RS: What are five wardrobe staples every woman should have in her closet?
BG: A pair of statement shoes can change any outfit; a great day bag that you can add to your jeans and T-shirts to make them look elevated and polished; a great bathing suit—the last thing you want to be doing in the summer is scrambling to find a good bathing suit. Sunglasses can make or break an outfit. Finally, anything floral—I’m loving florals right now.

RS: What’s one fashion “rule” you suggest to every client?
BG: One of the things I really try to incorporate with my styling with my clients—and why it made sense for me to partner with Marshalls—is that it’s important to continue to surprise people. I’m lucky to have been working with some of my clients for years now, and being able to surprise my clients, their fans, the press, and the fashion world is a great thing. When people are shopping for themselves on a daily basis, they should keep that element of surprise in mind.

RS: Do you have any insider tips for shopping Marshalls like a pro?
BG: Purple tags designate designer items, so anything more high-end will have a purple tag on it. Items towards the front of each section will reflect the newer merchandise, so always check there first.

RS: What are your tips for managing the tricky transition from sweltering heat outside to freezing AC inside during summer?
BG: Layers! Keep cardigans and lightweight jackets on hand at all times. I also think the athleisure trend and being able to wear sweatshirts and short sleeve sweatshirts and keeping those pieces readily available are a great way to ease yourself into summer.

RS: Who are your style icons?
BG: Jared Leto, Rami Malek, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.

RS: What is your favorite look you have ever styled?
BG: Sarah Hyland for the 2014 Emmy awards. She wore a Christian Siriano white top, orange ball skirt and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, with her hair in a top knot. It was a transformative moment for her and a really fun project to work on with Christian.
