Experiment with these recipes that will make your skin and hair glow.
This hydrating mask from Deborah Burnes, CEO of sumbody skincare and author of Look Great Live Green, can help restore moisture to dry skin.
2 tbsp. avocado
2 tsp. honey
1 tbsp. coconut, rice, or soymilk
Combine all ingredients until they make a thick paste. If it’s too thick, you can add more coconut milk as needed. Apply in the shower, and leave on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing off. “It’s not good for skin to let a mask dry on,” says Burnes.
Honey Banana Hair Pack
According to Gabriel, this mask can revive hair that’s dull and tired.
1 organic banana
1 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. heavy cream
Blend all ingredients with a stick blender thoroughly so there are no clumps. Apply to the hair and let set for about 10 minutes. Gently rinse off with warm water.
Alpha Hydroxy Facemask
Honey is a humectant, meaning it helps your skin retain moisture. A note from Burnes: Make sure you apply it all the way down to your collarbone. “We want our neck to age as gracefully as the skin on our face is aging,” she says.
½ tsp. organic fruit jelly or jam
½ tsp. honey
1 tsp. coconut milk
½ tsp. avocado

This recipe from Gabriel has Croatian roots, and works on all hair types.
1 tbsp. mustard powder
2 tbsp. yogurt
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. honey
1 tsp. any vegetable oil
Combine all ingredients, stir, and apply to dry hair. Cover with a plastic shower cap and keep it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with water and a little vinegar.
Lightening Tomato Cleanser
Julie Gabriel, author of Green Beauty Recipes and founder of Petite Marie Organics skincare, shares a simple recipe to brighten your complexion.
1 ripe tomato
2 tbsp. milk
2 tbsp. lemon, lime, or orange juice
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Apply to the skin with a cotton ball and leave to work its magic for three to five minutes, then rinse with tepid water. This cleanser cannot be stored so it’s best to use it right away and add any leftovers to your pasta sauce.
Beer is good for more than just happy hour—when mixed with apple cider vinegar (one of Burnes’ favorite skincare ingredients), this rinse can create shine, luster, and vibrancy.
¼ cup beer
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
Apply on the hair and scalp, then rinse off after no more than five minutes.
Hydrating Hair Mask
In addition to hydration, research suggests that avocados can potentially protect skin from UV damage and early signs of aging. Burnes recommends putting a plastic bag over your head after applying the mask to retain heat.
¼ tsp. avocado
¼ tsp. honey
¼ tsp. yogurt
¼ tsp. soy, almond, or coconut milk (any non-dairy milk)
Combine and apply onto your hair from roots to ends. You can put a plastic bag over your head and keep it on for several hours if you want, but you should use it for at least five minutes. Use shampoo to wash it out.
Facial Exfoliating Mask
Gabriel suggests taking a stab at making your own exfoliant. “Going green, at least when it comes to skin and hair care, is surprisingly cheap,” says Gabriel.
1 tbsp. fine muscovado sugar (a type of brown sugar)
1 tbsp. semolina (a type of flour)
1 tbsp. Greek-style yogurt
½ tsp. lemon juice
Combine all ingredients and stir well. This yields enough scrub to treat the face, neck and collarbone area. Leave on for a few minutes, then rinse off.
Antioxidant Facial Toner
This daily, hydrating spray can be stored in the refrigerator, says Burnes.
3 cups water
Peel of 1 citrus fruit
Other add-ins that you can simmer with citrus peel:
1½ cups rooibos tea
or 1½ cups green, white, or black tea
Simmer the peel in distilled water for 15-30 minutes. Then strain the water, discard the peel, and put the solution in a spray bottle. Spray on your face daily. There’s no need to rinse off.
