I Tested Over 100 Waterproof Makeup Products—These 8 Actually Work
Here’s a not-so-secret secret—not all waterproof makeup is actually waterproof. I learned this the hard way the many times I applied waterproof-marketed products only to emerge from the pool with raccoon eyes and patchy foundation (cringe). Sure, there’s no reason to have to apply makeup when going swimming, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look fabulous and feel your best at a pool party or beach outing. From the poolside-perfect lip stain to a hero eyeliner that won’t migrate no matter what, we compiled the best of each product so you can rock—and preserve—a full face of makeup, if you wish. There are many makeup products out there that claim to be water-resistant or long-wearing, but here are the ones that actually live up to the promise.
Makeup Forever Water Blend Face & Body Foundation
I always sing the highest praises about this truly waterproof foundation; the formula is made up of 80 percent water but feels like nothing on your skin. Don’t be fooled by the runny consistency—once it’s buffed in, this thing won’t budge. The coverage is light since the consistency is so thin, but you can build layers without looking cakey if you want more coverage. Quick note: Since this one doesn't have SPF, you'll want to make sure to apply your own sunscreen beforehand.
Milani Stay Put Matte 17HR Wear Liquid Eyeliner
If you want to talk waterproof, this thing is the most waterproof that you can get. I mean seriously, the invincible pigment would probably be able to withstand a monsoon. I will warn you that it’s pretty tough to remove (water alone obviously won’t work), so you’ll want to invest in an oil-based remover to get it off.
Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner
If you prefer a less pronounced line, line the base of your lashes or your waterline with this smudge pencil to get a pronounced pigment that will last for hours. Use the blending tip on the other end to create a softer effect.
Dior Addict Lip Tattoo
This lip tattoo is like a temporary color tattoo for your lips. If you’re doing intense swimming for a long period of time, it’s probably not going to stay entirely intact, but it will wear down to a very nice wash of color as the day goes on.
Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara
I have hooded lids (meaning my lashes constantly rub against my lids when I blink), so finding a waterproof mascara is of the utmost importance. Not only is this one the most transfer-proof and waterproof by far, it also lasts for 24 hours (I pull many all-nighters) and makes my short, straight lashes look like I got lash extensions.
L'Oreal Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow
Create a smoldering smoky eye or a natural flush of color with this cream-powder hybrid that won’t crease or fade even after being submerged completely in water. You can use your finger for allover color or a thin brush to line.
Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Full-Coverage Concealer
Whether it’s dark circles or that mysterious bruise on your leg, the concealer counterpart to the iconic All Nighter foundation (which is also great) is perfect for covering imperfections on your face or body. A little bit seriously goes a long way with this—it even covers up tattoos! The formula also has an added benefit of absorbing excess oil, which is great for oily skin people, but if you have dry skin you’ll want to moisturize your skin before you apply.
Maybelline TattooStudio Waterproof Eyebrow Gel
This stuff claims to be so powerful that it can last up to two days! I can’t vouch for that personally (never tried it), but I can say that the tint lasted an entire day at the water park—and I went on a whirlpool. The pigment looks super natural on your brows and has a slightly gel-like texture that doesn’t feel heavy.
