Rose Gold Makeup Anyone Can Pull Off

Say hello to the most flattering metallic makeup shade—rose gold. It straddles the line between cool and warm, so it flatters a variety of skin tones. Here, Rimmel London U.S. Makeup Artist Jo Baker explains how to wear the trendy hue.

“A subtle wash of rose gold shadow over the eyelid creates a soft, ethereal glow that’s perfect for day,” says Baker. Look for a powder formula with just enough shimmer to catch the light, like Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow in Petal ($25, Use a brush or your finger to swipe a sheer layer over your eyelids, letting it dissipate above your crease.

“Unlike silver hues, which can look icy, rose gold adds warmth to your look,” says Baker. “On brown eyes, it brings out the amber tones, while the contrast on lighter eyes really makes them pop.” Take your makeup from day to night by smudging on a creamy liner like Jane Cosmetics Water-Resistant Eyeliner in Rose Gold ($6, right along the lash line—on top and bottom lashes—then use your finger to smudge it, creating a smoky effect.

Add this metallic hue to your cheeks for an instant post-vacation-glow. Softly sweep a powder, like L’Oréal Paris Visible Lift Color Lift Blush in Rose Gold Lift ($12,, over the apples of your cheeks with a less-is-more approach to ensure you don’t go overboard. Have oily or acne-prone skin? Baker recommends avoiding shimmer—it can highlight problem spots. Opt for a matte formula, like NARS blush in Sex Appeal ($30, instead.

For a special occasion, add a touch of rose gold shimmer to make your lashes sparkle. Use a glitter specifically made for skin, like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Cosmetic Glitter in Beige ($15,, and use a cotton swab to place some onto your lashes after applying mascara. If it gets messy (it probably will), use a piece of tape to take any stray specks off of your face.

Lip Gloss

“A subtle sheen on the lips pairs great with bronzed summer skin,” says Baker. Wear a rose gold gloss alone—or over your favorite mauve lipstick. Rimmel London Oh My Gloss! In Nonstop Glamour ($6, has just the right tint and doesn’t feel sticky. Plus, the shimmer will help make lips appear fuller.

Transition from winter to spring with a rose gold liquid luminizer like this Stila All Over Shimmer in Kitten Shimmer ($20, Add a few drops to your moisturizer or foundation for a dewy, radiant finish—or swipe it along the high points of your face (tops of the cheeks, down the nose, and your cupid’s bow) for a subtler look.

Not so sure about adding rose gold to your makeup routine just yet? Ease into the trend by swiping it on your nails first. Easier to approach than silver or gold, rose gold is similar to blush and looks pretty on both tips and toes. Try Essie nail polish in Penny Talk ($8.50,
