Sometimes you just want a light pink lip. And no one can blame you—pink lips are pretty. But unless your pink lipstickhas a blue base, your teeth will look more yellow than they actually are. #truth

"The last thing you want is to see a yellow smile showing up on your Instagrams," says makeup artist Joseph Carillo (@josephcarillo). To combat that, be sure to brush your teeth with a whitening toothpaste and, if you're super freaked out by not having a black-light responsive smile like us (#obsessed), use your whitening strips the morning before your pink lip application (featured: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, $219.99; philips.com/sonicare).

Step-By-Step to Get a Pretty Pink Lip:

1. By all means, make sure that your lips are hydrated. You can do this by drinking water throughout the day (duh) and starting off your lip prep with a nourishing lip balm (featured: Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm, $29.70; nordstrom.com)

2. Next, line your lips using a light pink liner. This will help keep the lipstick from feathering (featured: By Terry Lip Liner in Baby Bare, $34; net-a-porter.com)

3. Heavily apply your pink lipstick using a lip brush to blend in (featured: Lancome Rouge in Love in Rose Tendresse, $29; net-a-porter.com)
