When I was younger and people used to ask me which color was my favorite, and I always used to reply, "Purple because it's what princesses wear." Not much has changed really, except I've also added navy, black, and most earth and blush tones to my list of faves. So when makeup artist Joseph Carrillo (@josephcarrillo) and I were talking about eye looks to wear around the holidays, he said, "What about a purple smoky eye? I love a good purple." So do I, Joseph. So do I.

The best thing about purple, is that it works on every single skin tone and every single eye color. And, since purple has a majestic quality, you too can feel like a princess whilst rocking a regal smoky eye, m'lady.

Step-By-Step to a Purple Smoky Eye:

1. Highlight the brow bone with a mushroom color eyeshadow down into the crease (featured: MAC Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Quarry, $16; nordstrom.com)

2. Shade in the crease and over the lid with a soft bronze shadow (featured: Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Snake Bite, $19; ulta.com)

3. Next, take a plum color gel shadow and paint it over just your lid and along your lower lash line (featured: It Cosmetics Liner Love in Rich Plum, $24; ulta.com)

4. Add a dark purple shadow to just the lid by patting it on with your finger. Take a eyeliner brush and light apply the same color to your lower lash line (featured: Kat Von D Metal Crush Shadow in Danzig, $21; sephora.com)
