You were too focused on the Met Gala to notice what Kristen Stewart did with her hair, weren't you?

While you were busy scouring social media feeds to see all the Met Gala looks, Kristen Stewart debuted a fairly unexpected hairstyle on the 2018 Cannes Film Festival red carpet. It's not that this look has been infrequently worn–it's perhaps been worn more frequently than the world needs–it's just that it's not a hairstyle typical of A-listers walking the red carpet in black-tie attire.

You see, Stewart donned a black evening dress with an ornate pin to the Cannes Opening Gala in France on May 8 and paired it with a rat tail. From the front, the 28-year-old actress went for more of a retro glam, femme-fatale updo.

And from the back? A look I can only describe as a rat tail at the base of two giant sea shells. (Can you tell I'm not a hair stylist?)

I admit, at first I was alarmed to see this sliver of a braid trickling down the celebrity's neck. Maybe because it's Kristen Stewart, maybe because I'm blinded by the sheen of Hollywood, or maybe because I've been staring at the photos for so long I don't know up from down, but I'm starting to change my tune.

Earlier that day, the star wore a similar, slightly less manicured version of the hairstyle (this one threw a messy low bun into the mix, hey Meghan Markle). While participating in a press conference with the 2018 feature film jury, of which she is a member along with jury head Cate Blanchett, Stewart donned a pastel blue tweed pantsuit, creating a cacophony of sights that only the edgy celebrity could make ring harmoniously.

I don't have any doubt I could never pull this off, nor would I ever have an event to wear such an intricate hairstyle, but Stewart, unbelievably, looks cool doing it.

Cannes will take place until May 19, so TBD on whether the rat tail is her full-time festival look or just a dramatic entrance to turn rat tail-less heads.
