Karl Lagerfeld’s new makeup collaboration is all about "illuminating beauty."

Karl Lagerfeld (albeit a somewhat controversial figure) oozes chicness and on-the-cusp trends, so if he's launching a makeup line, you know it will balance timelessness and novelty.

Creative director of Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous label, Lagerfeld has teamed up with Australian beauty brand ModelCo to see some of his makeup visions to fruition. The 84-year-old's collection has a theme of "illuminating beauty," with ModelCo CEO Shelley Sullivan divulging to WWD, "Every product is illuminated through packaging or an innovative formula. The Lip Lights range literally lights up with [an] inbuilt LED light and mirror.”

While Lagerfeld's drawings inspired the packaging of the makeup line, the design of which he oversaw–many items in the collection feature a miniature bust of Lagerfeld himself–he concedes, "The technical part I don’t know about; I only know the aesthetic part.”

The Lagerfeld-ModelCo makeup line, advertised on ModelCo's site as "Kiss Me Karl," has more than 50 pieces according to WWD, including eight shades of matte lipstick, eight shades of lip gloss, four shades of special-effect top coat, a liquid eyeliner, a volumizing mascara, a brow gel and crayon set, an eyeshadow palette, a powder highlighter, makeup brushes, and a mini clutch housing a lip kit.

Prices range from $15 up to $195, and the line will have a one-time release on May 14 exclusively at Nordstrom in the United States, on karl.com, and on modelco.com.

Chief Executive Officer of Karl Lagerfeld Pier Paolo Righi told WWD, “This collaboration presents a new, very relevant way to connect with our audience, for whom we are much more than a fashion brand — we are a fashionable companion in their daily lives. Looking beautiful when going out is, of course, important to our consumers, and we are very happy that we can help them [do] so and can do it with a smile.”

According to Lagerfeld, “This collection is done for people of any age who may like it—also young people who know more about makeup than all of us.”
