The ponytail is the hairstyle equivalent of an eternal classic. At once functional, and when done right, elegant, it is pretty much a staple in any woman's wheelhouse.

But, there's a fine line between intentional and deliberately styled ponytails, and ones that are haphazard (although there is a time and a place for everything). We consulted Ammon Carver, of the Ammon Carver L'ANZA Healing Hair Studio and Creative Director of L'ANZA healing haircare, to get the barebones of a chic, swept-back pony that you can always rely on to polish off a look. Just to make things even easier we also broke the steps down for you below:

1. Follow the natural line of your cheek bone while pulling your hair back.

2. Secure ponytail with an elastic band

3. Smooth down fly aways with a light hold hair spray.

4. Pull sections of ponytail for movement where you like.
