Don’t have a headband lying around? Get crafty and DIY one with your own hair. It may look intricate, but anyone who knows how to do a three-strand braid can pull it off. And don’t be intimidated if your hair isn’t quite as long. If your strands hit your shoulders, this style will work for you. Whether you’re spending the day running around doing errands or headed to an outdoor concert, this style is easy, quick, and comfortable. Here’s how to pull it off in three simple steps.

Follow These Steps

  1. If your hair is naturally straight or fine, add some waves with a curling iron. (This gives locks extra texture and volume.)
  2. Grab a small section of hair, about one inch wide, from just behind the top of your ear.
  3. Hold the section of hair up towards the ceiling as you braid it. (Braiding hair upwards helps guide it in the right direction, so that it will lay flat against your head when you turn it into a headband.)
  4. Secure at the end of the braid with a clear elastic.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Wrap each braid across the top of your head, keeping it in front of your loose hair so that it holds the hair back.
  7. Secure the braids behind each ear with a bobby pin. If your hair is too short to go all the way across, just pin them to each other wherever they land.
