The Hairstyle Trends You’re Going to See Everywhere in 2018
Bangs are back and better than ever.
In 2017 we saw shag cuts and technicolor dream hair take the internet by storm, but with a new year comes new style trends, and 2018 is going to be all about vintage inspiration, bangs, and a lot (and we mean a lot) of hair accessories. Here are some of biggest trends that you’ll be talking to your hairdresser about this year.
Remember the Zooey Deschanel bangs everyone wanted back in 2009? Well, grab your scissors, because they are going to be big in 2018. Messy, wavy bangs that fall just under the eyebrows will be all over the red carpet, but that’s just the beginning of a range of vintage trends hitting the runways, red carpets, and everywhere else this year.
Looking to refresh your look without making an appointment at the hair salon? Some of your favorite childhood hair accessories could help with that, as scrunchies, ribbons, and barrettes are back in style. Start incorporating some of your favorite low-maintenance looks from back in the day, like clipping your hair back over each ear with barrettes or securing a low ponytail with a colorful scrunchie or ribbon.

It seems like a big trend in 2018 will be taking beloved styles from the past and giving them an updated twist. Blunt lobs are nothing new, but expect to see the red carpet covered with vintage-inspired looks, featuring ends that roll under (think old Hollywood glam) or flip out (think a more relaxed version of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s hairstyles in the early 2000s). For long hair, the 1970s high ponytail is coming back in a major way, but it's not the same high ponytail that Ariana Grande is known for, or the version that you wear the the gym. Taking a curling iron to the ends of the hair and creating loose waves or lightly-defined curls will give the updo a fresh, new look. For a quicker style, add some shine serum to the ends of straight hair for an elegant upgrade.
While an appreciation for natural, curly hair has been on the rise over the past year, we'll see new styles embracing the look in 2018. Expect to see curls everywhere—shags, pixies, lobs, and bobs are all getting a curly upgrade. Plus, textured ponytails are coming back in a big way (like ones that feature tons of elastic bands, creating a bubble effect), as well as teased-out fishtail braids.
2018 is all about the deep side part. You can brush your hair to either the right or the left and instantly refresh your look. It is the perfect option for anyone who tends to feel intimidated by the middle part, and can be easily glammed up with loose waves or tighter curls. Pro tip: make sure to add some volume to the side of your head that has the least amount of hair when you do a side part, because the style can tend to look uneven if part of your head has volume and the other doesn't. Just use some texturizing spray or dry shampoo and shake your fingers through that side of your hair at the roots to create some extra oomph.
