Amazon’s “Instant Pickup” service will have your package ready in just two minutes.
Long gone are the days when you had to wait a grueling two hours before your Prime Now order would arrive at your doorstep. Now, Amazon shoppers can order items and have them within minutes at a designated pickup location.
The online retailer is expanding its “Instant Pickup” program, which is already live on pilot college campuses in five cities: Berkeley, California; College Park, Maryland; Columbus, Ohio; Los Angeles, and Boston.
While the speedy service will be available to anyone who uses Amazon, it's only free for Prime subscribers.
To use the service, shoppers need to download the most recent version of the Amazon Shopping App (version 9.15 on iOS and 12.5 on Android). Users can then shop through the app and purchase items that are eligible for Instant Pickup at their local Amazon locker center. When the shopper arrives at the Amazon lockers, they’ll scan a barcode on their phone and the locker with their items will pop open. As long as there are no kinks, the shopper should have no wait time and no reason to interact with a sales person.
Most of the items currently available are college essentials including school supplies, snacks, and tech accessories like headphones and phone chargers.
Parents can also make orders for their children from home and choose to have the item available for pickup on their kid's college campus, instead of having it shipped to their residence hall.
