Waffleback Pull-On High-Rise Tapered Pants in Windowpane

Finding a great pair of straight leg, tapered pants is like striking gold. They have to have a great fit through the waist that doesn't gap or squeeze, an immaculate fit in the leg that's flattering and not baggy, and they need to land at the precise area of the ankle that creates the illusion that your legs go on for days and allows you to wear a bunch of different shoe styles.

I'm still unsure if this is a holiday miracle straight out of a Lifetime Christmas movie or a piece of well-earned karma, but I've found this exact description in the Madewell Waffleback Pull-On High-Rise Tapered Pants in Windowpane. Not only do these Madewell pants check all of those boxes, but they're incredibly soft, comfortable, and have a sharp, wearable print that looks equally good on models of all sizes (which range from xx-small to xx-large in petite, standard, and tall). Madewell's inclusive sizing ensures that many people can take a look at these pants on-site and see themselves rocking them, and it surely worked on me.

It's unsurprising that an elastic waistband ended up being comfortable. There's enough stretch in there to truly accommodate a couple of sizes within each pair, meaning that the medium really does fit people who are a size 6 or an 8. But it's hard to pull off an elastic waistband that doesn't look as potentially frumpy or cheap as it might sound. The material doesn't bunch along the elastic in these pants, instead lying relatively flat.

They're easy to wear via this pull-on style, but the print—a light beige windowpane against a deeper caramel brown—makes them elegant, office-appropriate, and stylish enough to wear to dinner or a night out with friends when it's cold. I'm specifically calling out the weather here because these pants are warm. Made out of a thick, almost plush cotton fabric, they're super soft and cozy but still breathable, so I won't be sweating through them on the subway.

They feel great against my skin, but I also feel great in them. The high-waisted design hits me perfectly just across the belly button, and the bottom hem of the expertly tapered leg gives me the flexibility to wear these with loafers, sneakers, or boots. The shape of the leg (they cut slightly inward as they follow the length of the leg down) is like the ideal mom jean that everyone has been trying to find for the past year, but in trouser form. They're not too tight, not too loose, with an overall slim, but not restrictive, fit.

If you haven't gathered so far, these Madewell pants are my new favorite piece in my wardrobe, and I'll be wearing them until spring rolls around and forces me to retire them for the season. But I'll savor every moment we have together till then.
