Few things are certain about what school will be like for kids this year, but one thing’s for sure: Face masks should be on your back-to-school shopping list, whether your kids are attending classes in person or remotely.

“Multiple studies here and abroad show that children carry the same or higher viral loads of SARS-CoV2 [the virus that causes COVID-19] as infectious adults," says Aileen Marty, MD, FCAP, an infectious disease specialist and professor at Florida International University. "This is strong evidence that children can spread the disease to others.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise children ages two and older wear masks over their nose and mouth when they’re not able to practice social distancing in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19. That’s in addition to cleaning their hands often and remaining at least six feet away from others whenever possible.

Dr. Marty echoes CDC recommendations stating masks should fit snug and cover the nose and mouth with multiple layers of fabric while allowing airflow. This goes for both children and adults.

Although you can make your own face coverings, plenty of retailers now offer the new essential in sizes and designs specifically made for little ones. You can shop face masks for kids from familiar brands like Cubcoats, Athleta, Gap, Honest Company, Crayola, and more.

Ahead, take a look at 25 of the best face masks for kids you can shop online today. You might even find a couple for yourself while you’re at it.
