  • Check your attic insulation. If snow melts off the roof soon after it falls, or if icicles form even though the weather hasn't gotten noticeably warmer, too much heat may be escaping your house. Call a contractor if you notice either of these signs. Or inspect your attic from the inside out. If you have an unfinished attic, make sure that none of the floor joists are visible; if so, more insulation is required. Also look for dirty (or blackened) insulation. This is an indication that air is moving through it and gaps behind or under the insulation will need to be sealed.
  • Cut your dry-cleaning bill. The holiday party season is over and you have a pile of worn festive outfits to prove it. Check your local newspaper for coupons and deals.

  • Rescue your winter skin. If the cold, dry air is wreaking havoc on your complexion, it's time to switch up your beauty routine. Wash your face only at night, and stick to showers of five minutes or less with lukewarm (not hot) water.
  • Avoid the sniffles. January is right in the middle of cold and flu season, so keep these tips in mind.
