  • Save on your electric bill. You’ve installed EnergyStar appliances galore, but your bill keeps creeping upward. Cut down on the costs by insulating your hot-water heater and installing a programmable thermostat. These small tasks could save you $72 a year. Read more tips here:

  • Check your sump pump. Do this now, before the first spring thaws of March, when melting snow and rain showers can cause basement flooding. To test, pour two gallons of water into the drain to raise the float and activate the motor. It should stop running once the water level drops below the activation level.
  • Get moving. Oops! Four weeks into 2009 and you’re nowhere near making good on your New Year’s resolution of getting into shape. Consider this a call to action: Take the Real Simple Workout Challenge and do your body (and that resolution) good.
  • Celebrate Valentine’s Day at home. Forget about trying to score reservations on February 14th and have a romantic night in by making this simple but delicious dinner. Sip on Sparkling Passion-Fruit Aperitifs while you indulge in mini pork rack with roasted potatoes and green beans. Then hit your sweet spot with Romantic Brownie Sundaes.

  • Get a quick energy boost. Is your personal energy tank empty? Follow this tip for an instant refill: Put the tip of your tongue against the ridge behind your upper teeth. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Then inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, and exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat for a total of four breaths.
