Talk about love at first sight. When one-year-old Elmer set eyes on two-week old Imogene at a party, he announced, “I want that baby!” Still smitten in elementary school, he proposed with a ring from a box of Cracker Jack. (She turned him down.) It wasn’t until Imogene, now 78, was a senior in college that they finally went on a real date. On their third evening out, Elmer, 79, proposed again. This time she said yes, and two children and two grandchildren later, the Gary, Indiana couple has no regrets.

Their Secrets to a Happy Marriage

1“Never stop courting. We always try to see each other the way we did in our early days, even though I sure look different from that girl he married!” says Imogene.

2“We like to hit the road. We’re not stuck in monotony. We’ve sailed down the Nile and got aboard a camel,” says Elmer.

3“Elmer always takes my hand and leads me across the parking lot like I’m his girl and he’s taking care of me,” says Imogene.

4“I take Imogene’s hand and help her walk because otherwise she’s liable to fall down,” says Elmer.
