As it turns out, we’re not alone: According to the results of a new survey conducted by Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest general veterinary practice in the world, employees and HR decision makers overwhelmingly agree that pet-friendly offices improve employee morale and workplace dynamics.
The survey, which included 1,006 employees from U.S. companies of varying sizes and industries, as well as 200 human resource professionals responsible for decisions on policy and benefits for their company, found that dogs really are man’s best friend (or, well, colleague). Employees said the presence of pets fostered better relationships at work, improved work-life balance, and reduced stress levels. Plus, respondents working amongst canines didn’t feel as guilty about occasionally leaving their pet at home.
“Being able to take a time out from a stressful situation to pet a dog can really improve an employee’s wellbeing,” Tami Majer, senior vice president of people and organization at Banfield Pet Hospital told RealSimple.com. “Having a pet to interact with also lowers the barrier to meeting new people—it makes it easier for new associates to get to know their team and their workplace.”
Pet-friendly companies are also more likely to retain talent. More than 80 percent of employees and 91 percent of HR decision makers said they feel a greater sense of loyalty to employers as a result of pet-friendly policies. New policies could even encourage non pet-owners to get a pet, and 39 percent of current pet owners said they would consider getting an additional pet if their office implemented pet-friendly polices.
