Gathering the whole family together in one place is tough, but getting them to enjoy the shoot is nigh impossible. Tactics to try:

  • Plan the shoot beforehand, and let the "models" know how long it will take (20 to 30 minutes max). Solicit opinions about setting up the photo; they'll be more enthusiastic subjects.

  • Two fashion-photographer tricks: Play music and have snacks.

  • Skip "Say 'cheese'" and have them smile on the count of three, says Christina Shook, a San Francisco photographer. "Holding the pose makes them look frozen."

  • If you don't plan on getting in the photo, focus the frame, step back — with your finger on the button — and, as you ply them with your charm and humor, shoot away.
