Age: 25.
Occupation: Product manager for a men’s grooming company.
Family Members: Mama and Papa Dukes, brother Drew, sister-in-law Chrissy, and dog Boss Hog.
I’ve lived here for: Three years.
I live here because: I moved here for a job, but I stayed because of the people.
My neighborhood: Vinings, in northwest Atlanta.
My favorite restaurant: Goldbergs Bagel Company & Deli (404-256-3751). It’s a quaint little diner with a couple of locations. The staff often gives you good-bye hugs.
If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: Two scrambled eggs with American cheese and a hint of cream cheese.
My favorite tourist destination: The Swan Coach House (
www.swancoachhouse.com), on the grounds of the Atlanta History Center, has a dreamy atmosphere. Enjoy eating in the restaurant (it gets crowded around 11:30 a.m.) or stroll through the art gallery.
Overrated tourist destination: The Coca-Cola Museum. (The museum closes in April; the New World of Coca-Cola will open in its place.) You will walk away with shoes that are sticky from four-year-olds spilling Coke on the floor.
Best insider spot: Park Bench (404-264-1334), a bar where the owner and his band play favorites like “Billie Jean” and also throw in music of their own every night.
My favorite area: Vinings, my neighborhood. It offers the perfect blend of city shopping and the South’s greatest gift—hospitality.
Best place to go shopping: Blue Genes (
www.shopbluegenes.com). The three sisters who own the place always have the best jean selection with the best sales each season.
The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: Southern soul food.
The best way to get around: This is probably the one thing Atlanta could improve upon. The Marta, Atlanta’s subway (
www.itsmarta.com), isn’t the most convenient system, but it will help you get from the airport to big neighborhoods. Once there, walk, take taxis, or rent a car.
If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: Home. If you walk into any shop, you’ll find a smile, a comfy place to rest, and entertainment.
I tell my friends to stay at: Any bed-and-breakfast in Virginia Highlands or Inman Park. These neighborhoods boast three-bedroom historic houses with a hearty breakfast and cushiony beds.
They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: Atlanta is for...livin’ the dream. You can be anybody you want to be.
