Join If: The pumped-up atmosphere, the classes, and the equipment at a health club will help motivate you to stick to a fitness plan. The average gym member logged 90 visits a year, with a majority of people sweating it out two to three times a week, according to a survey conducted by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, an industry trade group. With an average gym membership cost of $50 a month (plus a $100 to $150 initiation fee), that comes to about $7 per visit for a twice-a-week first-year membership.

Options
There are generally lots of options in a given market — gyms offering different levels of services at different prices. If you can't justify the cost of the high-end gym with the fluffy white towels, maybe a less expensive, more bare-bones place, like the YMCA, would suit you better. Keep in mind that many health clubs offer free guest passes so potential clients can sample their amenities before committing.
