Is anyone sleeping through the night? Judging from the stats, not many. Two out of three women say they frequently experience trouble sleeping (men have it slightly better), according to the National Sleep Foundation. That may explain why Americans spent $3 billion last year on drugs designed to generate Z’s.

There seem to be as many reasons why people can’t sleep as there are sleepless people. Some are by nature night owls who are genetically programmed to stay awake late. Others fall asleep without trouble but wake up repeatedly throughout the night, their minds racing with anxiety and to-do lists. There are light sleepers whose rest is disturbed by every little noise or movement of their bed partner (or pets). And physical problems, such as restless legs and hormonal fluctuations associated with menopause, are to blame for keeping some women up in the wee hours.

Here, nine women — each suffering from a different sleep problem — share their frustrations. Real Simple’s panel weighs in on what the women may be doing wrong and how they can change their ways. If you identify with any of these stories, the experts’ advice is bound to work for you, too.
