Transform a Console into a Work Space
The typical console table sits against a wall in a foyer or a hallway, just holding stray bills and papers. Yours can earn its keep if you add a laptop, a stylish lamp, and a few essential tools.

How to Set It Up
  • Choose a table that allows you to type comfortably when you’re seated at it. The right height for most women is 28 to 31 inches. And make sure the table won’t impede foot traffic; pick a console that is no more than 20 inches in depth.
  • Use a deep basket as a trash can or a place to hold magazines and catalogs.
  • Minimize unsightly wiring by installing Wi-Fi.
  • An unobtrusive lamp serves a dual purpose: It functions as a task light when you’re working, and it illuminates the entryway when you’re not.
  • Flank your console with seating. When you’re ready to work, pull up a chair.

  • The Goods
    Parsons console table (44 1⁄2 by 16 by 31 inches), $440.

Tip: Choose a colorful console to perk up a neutral-toned space.
