If the little black dress had an outerwear equivalent, it would be the trench coat: chic, functional, and universally flattering. But unlike the LBD, which was popularized by Coco Chanel, the trench has less glamorous and far more utilitarian origins as part of the British army uniform during World War I. No surprise, considering some of its signature components: Epaulets secured a rifle strap; D rings on the belt held grenades; shoulder flaps and wrist buckles guarded against rain.
Today’s trench is much more stylish than your standard army issue you’ll look great no matter what you have on underneath and it will keep you dry in a sprinkle. With one of these picks in your closet, facing a rainy day won’t seem like a losing battle.
