My Hometown: Insiders' Guides to 14 Cities

Real Simple asked women all over the country to share what’s not to be missed about their cities

My Washington, D.C.: Angela-Marie Mathias
Age: 25.

Occupation: Student

Family members: Mother and father.

I’ve lived here for: 25 years.

I live here because: I was born and raised here, plus it’s a great place to live with lots to do.

My neighborhood: I live in Fort Washington, which is on the border of D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia.

My favorite museum: Corcoran Gallery of Art (500 17th Street NW, 202-639-1700, www.corcoran.org).

My favorite tourist destination: The World War II Memorial. It’s right on the busy, touristy Mall, but no one really knows it’s there. Set serenely among trees, it resembles an ancient Greek temple.

Overrated tourist destination: The rest of the Mall. Don’t people know there’s more to see in D.C. than this? Branch out.

Best insider spot: Theodore Roosevelt Island (703-289-2500, www.nps.gov/this) and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove (703-289-2500, www.nps.gov/lyba), on the Potomac River, have the best views of D.C.

The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: People say it’s Ben’s Chili Bowl (1213 U Street NW, 202-667-0909, www.benschilibowl.com) — famous for chili dogs and chili hamburgers.

The best way to get around is: Drive and pray you’ll find parking. The metro doesn’t take you everywhere you want to go, and taxis aren’t that frequent. Walk only if the place you’re going to is within seven blocks, especially during hot, humid days.

The one thing most outsiders don’t know about this city is: We tend to travel frequently between D.C., Virginia, and Maryland for work and play. There’s so much to do, you can’t claim just one place as your favorite.

If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: Monumental.

They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: The D.C. area is for...those who can survive unruly drivers and never-ending traffic and construction.
