My Hometown: Insiders' Guides to 14 Cities

Real Simple asked women all over the country to share what’s not to be missed about their cities

My San Francisco: Janelle Wang
Age: 34.

Occupation: TV host.

Family members: My whole family is in the

Bay Area — my parents, sister, niece, grandma, aunts, and uncles, and over a dozen cousins.

I’ve lived here for: Basically all my life, though I had to move away after college because of my career. But now I’m back.

I live here because: The weather is great, the restaurants are yummy, and there’s so much to do in the Bay Area. I can surf in the ocean or go skiing in the mountains.

My favorite restaurant: PPQ Dungeness Island (www.ppqdungeness.com).

If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: An entire crab for yourself and the delicious garlic noodles.

My favorite museum: De Young Museum (www.thinker.org), featuring American and contemporary art.

My favorite tourist destination: Pier 39 (www.pier39.com), because of the cute, lounging sea lions.

Overrated tourist destination: I love them all, but some you need to visit only once or twice every decade, like Alcatraz (www.nps.gov/alcatraz), the Coit Tower (415-362-0808), and winding Lombard Street.

Best insider spot: Hard Knox Café (www.hardknoxcafe.com), which has great southern food. It’s on the outskirts of town (read: It’s never crowded).

Best place to go shopping: Union Square (www.unionsquareshop.com).

The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: Chinese food. Very authentic, and I should know (I’m Chinese). Lots of good restaurants for cheap.

The best way to get around: Public transportation or taxi, because parking is tough and the meters are expensive — 25 cents will get you only five or six minutes.

When you visit, don’t forget to pack: A jacket. When the fog rolls in, it gets cold.

But leave room in your suitcase for: Knickknacks from Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf.

If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: Perfect.

I tell my friends to stay at: The Westin St. Francis hotel (www.westinstfrancis.com). It has been around for 100 years and is in the heart of Union Square. The cable car also runs right in front.

They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: San Francisco is for... People who like to eat! There are lots of great ethnic restaurants at very affordable prices.
