My Hometown: Insiders' Guides to 14 Cities

Real Simple asked women all over the country to share what’s not to be missed about their cities

My San Francisco: Adrienne Arieff
Age: 35.

Occupation: Fashion-marketing professor at the San Francisco Art Institute.

I’ve lived here for: Six years.

I live here because: I’ve lived in many places, but San Francisco is my favorite.

My neighborhood: Potrero Hill.

My favorite restaurant: Chez Papa Bistro (www.chezpapas.com).

If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: Mussels and French fries.

My favorite museum: Asian Art Museum (www.asianart.org).

My favorite tourist destination: The Ferry Building Marketplace of the Embarcadero (www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com). You can sit by the bay, eat oysters, and organic meats and fish, and drink organic wines, all under one roof.

Overrated tourist destination: Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s dirty and has very mediocre restaurant choices.

Best insider spot: MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing; 415-863-3011) and True Sake (415-355-9555) — the only sake store in the United States.

My favorite area: Potrero Hill for the best views, dog parks, coffee shops, and weather in the city.

Best place to go shopping: Hayes Valley.

When you visit, don’t forget to pack: A jacket. It gets cold every night of the year.

But leave room in your suitcase for: Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Napa Valley, and a San Francisco Giants baseball cap.

The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: Niman Ranch meat and Ghirardelli chocolates.

The best way to get around: Walking until you can’t stand the hills anymore — then grab a taxi.

The one thing most outsiders don’t know about this city is: Skiing is 3 1/2 hours away in Lake Tahoe and hiking is 20 minutes away in Pacifica.

If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: Foggy.

I tell my friends to stay at: The Majestic (www.thehotelmajestic.com). It has an Edwardian style with loads of bay windows. Plus, it’s affordable, near cable cars, and on a beautiful street in Pacific Heights.

They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: San Francisco is...a lifestyle city for people who love food, wine, and the outdoors.
