My Hometown: Insiders' Guides to 14 Cities

Real Simple asked women all over the country to share what’s not to be missed about their cities

My New York: Heba Dolah
Age: 28.

Occupation: Senior business analyst.

I’ve lived here for: 28 years.

I live here because: It is the only city where, at any time, you can get Indian, Chinese, Ethiopian, and Spanish food all on one block.

My neighborhood: Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

My favorite restaurant is: Bar 89 (www.bar89.com).

If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: The Wasabi Tuna Steak Sandwich and the Hell’s Fire Chips. Everything on the menu is fantastic.

My favorite museum: The Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History (www.amnh.org).

Overrated tourist destination: The River Café. While the view of New York City from your table in the restaurant is breathtaking, the food is so-so.

Best insider spot: Grimaldi’s Pizzeria (www.grimaldis.com), in Brooklyn. The pizza is to die for.

Best place to go shopping: Soho. You can find anything and everything, from flea markets to little best-kept-secret boutiques to the bigger places, like Bloomingdale’s.

When you visit, don’t forget to pack: Extra credit cards. You’ll want to do a lot of shopping here.

But leave room in your suitcase for: Lots of new shoes and clothes.

The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: There is nothing like cheesy, greasy New York pizza.

The best way to get around is: Everyone must take the subway and hail a cab at least once in his or her life to experience the true New York lifestyle.

The one thing most outsiders don’t know about this city is: You don’t have to visit the cliché places (Times Square, the Empire State Building, etc.) to experience what New York City — the true New York City — is about.

If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: Limitless.

I tell my friends to stay at: The Hudson Hotel (www.hudsonhotel.com). The very trendy rooms may be small, but it is perfect for couples. The hotel has two bars and a restaurant with great food.
