Step 1: Drench the Soil
  • Turn on the waterworks. Using a hose-end or trigger sprayer on a gentle setting, thoroughly wet the soil with at least a gallon of water. This will help flush out excess minerals and salts. Too much buildup of either isn’t good for the health of a plant.


  • Don’t bug out. A generous watering will also force out or drown some of the pests that have taken up residence over the summer.


  • Clean up your act. While you’re at it, hose off the outsides of pots. Use a soft brush, if necessary, to scrub off dirt and debris.
