Organize Your Paper Files
To transform your filing system from an out-of-date archive of
random papers to an up-to-date repository for important documents,
stick to two principles:
(1) The more accessible and attractive
your files, the more likely you are to use them.
And
(2) the less
specific your filing categories, the easier it is to keep them
orderly. (Make one file for “Vacations” not one each for “Spring in Arizona,” “Fourth of July at Fred’s,” and “Winter Ideas.”)
You should have two filing systems one for the current year's
papers and one for the documents you need to archive. (For help making instant decisions, tuck into your filing box the Save It or Shred It? checklist that is included in the Four-in-One Checklist.)Along with financial papers, keep in your current-year file
information that's less obvious but just as useful: driving
directions, letters and other correspondence, appliance warranties,
a wish-list folder (for clippings on favorite haircuts, gift
possibilities, and decorating ideas).Filing Options
