From salad dressings to hot dogs, sandwiches to stews, a good mustard can often be the difference between ho-hum and “How great!” To find the best ones in the leading categories, Real Simple hauled out pigs in a blanket and New York pretzels and started to spread. Testers were asked to consider overall flavor and how well the mustards represented their categories. (For example, did the honey mustard have too much honey and not enough mustard?) Many nibbles later, the winners emerged.
