Good for Carpeting
Hoover Sidewinder, $34

Why We Like It: Thanks to its spinning brush, the Sidewinder sucks up all kinds of embedded dirt. Because it has a cord, it has unlimited juice, which means you can touch up several sections of carpeting before company arrives. (The Sidewinder is designed for use on carpeting and upholstery; on bare floors, some dirt just gets pushed around.) The unique nozzle turns 90 degrees, so you can reach dirt and dust bunnies in tight spots, such as under furniture. Because the large dirt cup is transparent, you don't have to guess when to empty it.

Where to Use It: A steep, carpeted staircase, where you'd rather not try to balance a heavy upright vacuum. Anywhere pet hair accumulates, including upholstered furniture.

To Buy: www.hoover.com or 800-944-9200 for store locations.
