How to Save Your Stuff
Whether you’re preserving a first edition from the 19th century or a finger painting from the first grade, these easy-to-follow techniques used by preservation experts will help ensure that your most prized possessions stay in mint condition for generations to come. For details, Tools for Preservation.

How to Preserve Books
Books you want to keep forever should be brushed clean and stored in an archival box. It’s also important to keep them in a space that isn’t too bright, moist, or hot, to prevent deterioration. Another danger to books is insects, especially silverfish and cockroaches. Always have insect traps near the book boxes; try pheromone sticky traps. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before handling the books to protect them from body oils and acids in your sweat.
Don’t Forget: Old books can be easily damaged by being opened flat. If you hear a book crack when you open it, chances are you’re damaging it. Next time, try putting small pillows under each side of the book to keep it from opening all the way.
