Special Features Worthwhile in a Washer
Appliance makers are trying their best to create machines that won’t damage clothes or hurt your wallet. There are the energy-efficient front-loading washers and machines with wash options that give clothes a deep wash with a gentle rinse.

Front-Loader
What it is: A washer that loads like a dryer.
Makes life easier because: It cleans better and has 25 percent more capacity than a top-loader. It also uses about a third less water and up to 65 percent less electricity.
On second thought: Entry-level units start at $600 (top-loaders, at $250). Special detergent is recommended.
Who needs it most: People who don’t like separating out their towels. (Front-loaders are even distributors.)

900+ RPM
What it is: Faster spinning, meaning drier clothes.
Makes life easier because: You’ll save drying time, which translates to a big savings on electricity bills.
On second thought: If you overestimate the number of rotations per minute needed (you can set it yourself), you risk pulling the fabric of your clothes.
Who needs it most: People who want to spend less time — and money — drying their clothes.

Extra Rinse
What it is: Extra water is dispatched to the wash load to fight stubborn stains better.
Makes life easier because: It eliminates excess detergent buildup that can irritate the skin. It’s incredibly useful for baby clothes.
On second thought: Sensitive to water prices? This is not a good option for you.
Who needs it most: People with sensitive skin and parents with young children.
