A wall shelf with pegs provides space for a few kitchen essentials that you don't want to stash inside a cabinet.

What to Hang: Aprons, pot holders, and dish towels. Don't hang pots, though: They can chip the painted rack. Bowls, a sugar canister, a salt crock, or a pepper mill can go up top on the 5 1/4-inch-deep shelf. Rest a picture frame on the back of the shelf for easy display.

Where to Mount: Put it safely above the kids' heads, about five feet up. And choose a spot at least two feet from the stove, so dangling aprons don't create a fire hazard.

Mounting Tools: Pencil, tape measure, level, stud finder, drill, Phillips screwdriver, and two screws with anchors (any size will fit with the sawtooth backing, but the 50-pound size is safest).

To Buy: Wall Shelf, $50, available in five colors, Stacks and Stacks, www.stacksandstacks.com.
