Problem: Dirty "hand wash only" sweater

Solution: Despite what clothing-care labels and your mother may have told you, you can put a wool, cashmere, or fine cotton garment in the washer. Just slip it in a protective pillowcase, choose the delicate cycle, and use cold water. Afterward, lay the garment flat on a towel to dry. For an extra-soft-and-fluffy effect, drop in a couple of capfuls of distilled white vinegar during the rinse cycle.
