What Should Stay:
  • Driver's license or ID card; medical-insurance card, prescription card, supermarket discount card; a week's worth of cash; loose change (keep it in your wallet so you'll actually use it); one or two credit cards, plus one ATM card. Carry only the cards you use at least once a week.

  • What Should Go:
  • Extra and little-used credit cards; department-store charge cards, Social Security card, voter-registration card; receipts and business cards. Set aside five minutes every week to file receipts.

  • Extras:
  • Hide a $20 bill in your wallet for emergencies.

  • Keep a list of your wallet's contents in case it's lost or stolen. (But not in your wallet.)
