What You Need: Plunger, plumber's snake or unwound wire hanger, bucket.
Step 1: Remove the stopper or filter. If you have not recently used chemicals in the drain, fill the basin with water to cover the head of the plunger. (Chemicals can splatter in eyes or on skin during plunging.) Lay a wet towel over any overflow openings to redirect pressure to the clogged drain. Plunge vigorously by moving the stick up and down while the rubber head stays in place. Dump any mess into the bucket and flush with hot water.
Step 2: If plunging doesn't work or if you've used chemicals, try the snake (or hanger). Remove the stopper or filter and work the hanger into the pipe.
Step 3: When you hit the blockage, gently pull the hanger up and dump any mess into the bucket, or try to push it through. The hanger may pierce a hole that will allow water to flush through and take the mess down the pipe.
Step 4: Flush the drain with hot water.
Tip: To fix a slow drain, pour 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then slowly add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar. Cover the drain. After about five minutes, flush with steaming-hot water.
