Before You Hire One
If you have a smoke problem, go over these basic points before calling in a chimney sweep: Is the damper open? Is the wood damp? Try burning only a Duraflame log on the back of the rack. If it's still smoky, you need help.

Common Pitfalls
The term chimney sweep is a misnomer of sorts. Don't assume your chimney needs cleaning every year. It does only when the sweep tells you so.
