A few things to keep in mind with pegboards.

  • To leave space for inserting the hooks, you’ll need to mount furring strips between the wall and the pegboard. These strips are typically about one inch thick and made of softwood (spruce, pine, fir).

  • Lay out the items you intend to hang so you can visualize the final arrangement before installing the hooks. Place the most frequently used items within closest reach.

  • Place hard-to-hang items, like basketballs and soccer balls, in a mesh nylon laundry bag, then put the whole bag on a hook, suggests organizing expert Barry Izsak, author of Organize Your Garage in No Time (Que, $17, www.amazon.com).

  • Once everything has found a home on the pegboard, consider outlining each item with a black marker, so everyone in the household will know what goes where. “You can even color-code the pegboard with paint, giving each person in the house her own section,” says Lynn Strober, a pegboard enthusiast in Yorktown Heights, New York, whose two teenage sons are road and mountain bikers, tennis players, and competitive skiers.
