The score or so of cleaning experts
Real Simple consulted about deep cleaning differed on many points, but one product earned a chorus of praise: the dry-cleaning sponge, a cellulose foam-latex pad that cleans without water or any harsh chemicals. “There’s no toxicity associated with this product at all,” says Jeff Bishop, a technical adviser to the Institute for Inspecting, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification and the president of Clean Care Seminars. “The foam latex attracts particles of soot and dust or pet hair from fabric shades, lamp shades, and upholstery. It’s like an eraser.” Just don’t expect it to remove stains. After vacuuming the fabric, rub the sponge across
it in short, even strokes (be gentle with delicate silks and wools, which can stretch if pulled). When the sponge starts to show dirt, wash it with soap and water, then wring it out and let it air-dry.
