DILEMMA:
At the grocery store, you think you spy a grandmother-type stuffing
a Snickers into her pocketbook. Do you yell, "Stop, thief!"?
DETERMINATION:
No. It's a minor offense, and you're not even sure the woman stole
the candy. Furthermore, while laws are made for you to follow, you
haven't been deputized to police everyone not following them every
motorist not wearing a seat belt or every 15-year-old smoking a
cigarette. On the other hand, if you're sure you've witnessed a
theft, especially if the stolen item is of some value, tell the
store manager. Says Peggy Post, "A manager should be trained in
handling this type of situation. Don't take things into your own
hands and get into a confrontation."
