Bedding
  • Make your bed each morning, even if the last time you made your own was sometime during the first Bush administration.

  • Strip — the bed, that is. The morning of your departure, strip the sheets and leave them in a neat pile on the bed.

  • Busing
  • Always offer to help, but always obey your host. When she tells you to relax and sit, do so. (If you're a frequent visitor and know where the dishwasher or dish towels are, go for it.)

  • Bathing
  • Keep every room you use tidy, but be especially vigilant in the bathroom. Use the towels that have been allocated to you, use them sparingly, and don't drape the damp ones over the antique mahogany highboy.

  • Keep showers brief — 10 minutes maximum. Clean drains and soap of any stray hairs.

  • Carry your toiletries to and from the bathroom. Nothing says "diva" like an upended Dopp Kit and makeup that's been splayed on the counter as if you own the place.
