Even organic produce should be washed well to remove dirt and
bacteria. A proper cleaning can also help remove some of the
chemical residues on conventionally grown food.
Wash all produce thoroughly under cold or warm (not hot) running
tap water. This has an abrasive effect that soaking does not.Thoroughly rinse tender fruits such as strawberries and
raspberries.Scrub tough-skinned produce, such as carrots, apples, and
squash, with a vegetable brush.Peel produce that is coated with wax, such as apples and
cucumbers, to get rid of chemical residues and bacteria that cling
to the skin.Trim the tops of lettuce and other leafy vegetables. Throw away
the outer few leaves.Avoid soap when cleaning fruits and vegetables because it can
add its own residue. Produce washes may remove some bacteria, but
running water can be just as effective.
