Tasks and Fees
Fixes leaky pipes and clogged drains. Installs pipes and fixtures for a bathroom addition. Replaces furnaces. Typically charges $60 to $75 an hour or a flat fee. May also charge an additional "trip" fee to pick up extra supplies. After-hours and holiday rates may apply.

Where to Find One
Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors National Association (www.phccweb.org). Or ask the superintendent or manager at your gym (it has all those showers and steam rooms) for a suggestion.

Before You Hire One
Know the brand names of your fixtures so the plumber can gauge in advance whether he's dealing with vintage (that is, hard to find) parts.

Common Pitfalls
Not knowing where the job begins and ends. "This is where people have problems — understanding who repairs and who cleans up," says Mike Quick, a construction-project veteran in St. Louis.

They'll Know You Mean Business When You Say...
“Do you have a quote?” A plumber's quote lists services and prices, including costs and labor.
