Tasks and Fees
Puts up shelves, screens, storm windows. Usually charges $30 to $50 an hour or by the job. May also charge an additional "trip" fee to pick up extra supplies.

Where to Find One
Call the superintendent of a local apartment or condominium building for a suggestion.

Before You Hire One
Check out his previous work; ask for photos. (When hiring anyone, ask for references. If he offers them first, it's a good sign.) And make sure he's licensed, certified, or insured. Ideally, he'll show a workman's compensation certificate, so you won't be liable if anyone is hurt.

Common Pitfalls
"Make sure he's not in over his head," advises Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List (www.angieslist.com), which rates and critiques service providers across the country. "If you need a plumber, hire a plumber."
