Observations
My Book Group, Then and Now

I have been in the same book group for the past decade. It's a small group, nine women, and although a couple of people have come and gone over the years, the core has stayed the same.

Our last meeting was Wednesday, and I was the host. The book was No Country for Old Men and I made Deer Valley chili (cheating, for sure, but so delicious), salad, bread, and two kinds of pie for dessert . I have a pair of vintage children's cowboy boots that I used as part of a centerpiece by putting a mint julep cup inside each and filling them with flowers. I added some candlesticks I have that look like antlers and the effect was partly inspired and partly deeply silly.

Anyway, as always, the conversation was animated and honest and hilarious. We did manage to talk about the book--a bit--and it was almost universally admired, if confusing at the beginning and filled with gun names that none of us understood.

The next morning I was thinking about how the group has changed, and I compiled a little list of what we used to talk about ten years ago and what we talk about now:

THEN

  • The chicken pox vaccine
  • Children who bite
  • Real estate
  • Should I stop working?
  • Similac, Huggies, Tylenol, Balmex, Gymboree
  • Children who don't sleep
  • Sex
  • Playdates
  • Presidents who sleep with interns
  • The scarcity of teenage babysitters
  • Domestic travel
  • How to explain things to your daughter when she's not invited to the birthday party

  • NOW

  • The HPV vaccine
  • Teens who drink
  • Real estate
  • Should I go back to work?
  • Xanax, Clonapin, Ambien, Prozac, Lexipro
  • Moms who don't sleep
  • Sex
  • Travel soccer
  • Governors who sleep with prostitutes
  • The importance of the bond market
  • International travel
  • How to explain things to your son when he sees the commercial for Cialis

We used to talk about our college experiences; now we are talking about our children's college applications. And by the way, I really hate the commercials for cialis and viagra too! I don't think that they should be on the tv before 10pm! Was the book better than the movie? I know it won an Academy Award and all but I liked Juno way better.

The more things change, the more they stay the same! Our book club hasn't been together for 10 years - closer to five. But, even in that short span, our conversations have gone from "What guy did you meet last night?" and "How much did you drink?" to "How much sleep are you getting?" and "How painful is labor - really?" It's fun to see the progression of our lives through our book club!

*Tear* I have fallen in love with my book club, which we started about two years ago, but I will soon be moving and am sad to think of the conversation shifts that I will be missing. However, I am also hopeful about my move and the fact that there is another potentially perfect book club waiting for me. Kristen, I liked the idea of having husbands come once a year (from one of your previous entries), and we will be doing that before I leave. Another 'out of the ordinary' book club idea is for each member to bring a favorite poem and read/recite it to the group and discuss-it really shows another side of people.

    How true.... :o)
It doesn't even have to be a book club to change our topics of conversation!
Just gettin' on in the cycle of life with friends and co-workers and family can produce the same results!
    Your lists were great, Kristin!

    Great Lists!
I am knew to the whole book club and found this one which will work great for me. I went online and voted for the book this month, but now cannot find any link to which book was chosen! Thanks

I loved reading the then & now. I'm 24 and already blessed with a "book club" where we don't really read books but we love each other and someday may incorporate a book here and there. I'm excited to create my own "then & now" list in the next ten years. What a blessing a community of women is - to share life with, love with and the best memories in the world!
