"Nobody's Going To Break My Stride"--can't recall the artist. Very upbeat; identified with it after my divorce.

Like others here I find it hard to limit myself to just one song. I have a few theme songs that speak to me at different times, and since I am a confirmed metalhead, they lean to the heavy.

"This Calling" by All That Remains and "The Element Of One" by Killswitch Engage get my adrenaline going and are frequent sing-alongs in the car on my way to work; the lyrics of both songs help remind me that there is something greater than all of us out there, and to focus on the positive and on the things that make us the same, instead of dwelling on our differences. (Killswitch's cover of "Holy Diver" by Dio is a great sing-along and spirit-lifter as well!)

When I'm feeling less than positive after a rough day at work, I get a cathartic anger release by cranking up "Zombie Autopilot" by Unearth or "The Blister Exists" by Slipknot in the car on the way home. "Waking The Demon" by Bullet For My Valentine--a song about reaching the point where you've had enough and making the decision to turn and fight--is another one I've turned to lately when anger and frustration have the better of me.

Recently I had to confront some people and situations in my life that were not working, and I had a lot of people telling me that I couldn't do the things I needed to do. Two songs got me through that time: "Hell & Consequences" by Stone Sour (which contains a line that perfectly encapsulated my philosophy at the time: "I am not a problem/till you make one out of spite/I'll give you hell & consequences for trying/if you don't want an enemy, don't f*** with my life!") and another Bullet For My Valentine song, "4 Words To Choke Upon" which perfectly sumed up how I felt about those who doubted me when I came through my struggles with flying colors after being told I wouldn't succeed: "LOOK...AT...ME...NOW!!!!"

Hi Kelley,

I'm sorry you weren't able to find your original post, but please rest assured that we haven't removed it.

It looks like you posted your original comment on Oct 24, 2007 at 06:51 PM, so while it's still on this page, it's gotten pushed pretty far down by all the subsequent answers other readers have posted. In case you'd like to scroll to find it, it looks like it's about one-third of the way down the page.

I hope that's helpful!

I find it amazing - I posted my "theme song" here about a year ago - in fact it pulls up in google..I'll start by saying I've subscribed to Real Simple since it's first year - I was a Charter subscriber - My "theme song" is a Christian standard - "Shout to the Lord", and yet , if you page through these entries one by one, my contribution is not listed. Does Real Simple find even the mention of a "faith-based" preference that offensive? I REALLY would like some feed back on this exclusion. KMLoveday@hotmail.com

This is a bit of a long list but is from the 'contents' page of a book of lyrics I collected about 10 years ago (a winter project) The criteria was that they be cheerful, not necessarily religious and have melodies with which most folk would be familiar. Great for sing-a-longs. Just re-reading the titles makes me happy.

"One" by Tina DIco, (of Zero 7) is my favorite song for lifting me up- for myself, or for inspiration to be that for those around me. It doesn't take much to start something in the right direction. It gives me chills to hear it every time.

One by Tina Dico
One touch can fill a life of longing
Not much is so much more than nothing
Yeah - All you need is One
An open smile to win you over
One single step will bring you closer
Yeah - All it takes is one

And when you’re running for cover
And you feel the sky falling down upon you
And when it feels like forever
Since you’ve seen the face of someone who loves you
Then one is all that you need
All that you need to keep you warm
Its all that you need
All that you need to move you, one
It’s all that you need
All you need is One

One word to fill a room of silence
A hand to offer you some guidance
Yeah - All you need is one
A moment long enough to notice
That everything’s stepped into focus
Yeah - All it takes is one

And when you’ve running from questions
And it seems like uncertainty controls you
And when you’re looking for answers
In the eyes of somebody who knows you
Then one is all that you need
All that you need to keep you warm
All that you need , All that you need to move you, one
Is all that you need , All that you need to get you home
All that you need , All you need is one.

Dave Matthews Band song 'Everyday' always sets me straight when I'm feeling overwhelmed. Also, Jars of Clay song 'Flood' and U2's 'Beautiful Day' are both good ones to get unstuck too.

New Shoes by Paulo Nutini--It played all over Italy last year and sort of caught on in America, but it puts the light on the truth--new shoes do make you feel better. Women are funny creatures. If we look good, we tend to feel good. It's really that simple. Put on a fun outfit, the right shoes, and there's a a little bit of a breath of fresh air that we somehow give ourselves...and the little things that were getting us down seem to melt away. If you ever doubt it...just take a look at my shoe closet and check my friends on my outlook on life. :) Of course, at the core of it all--I'm an eternal Jesus Freak...so, that's where my foundation comes from.

"Feelin' So Good" by Jennifer Lopez. You can't go wrong with this song, it's been my mantra for years. Just check out the lyrics, they make you feel confident, sexy, and unstoppable!!

When I opened up my eyes today
Felt the sun shining on my face
It became so clear to me that everything is going my way
I feel like theres no limit to what I can see
Got rid of fears that were holding me
My endless possibilities
Has the whole world opened for me
Thats why Im feeling...

Chorus: Im feeling so good
I knew I would
Been taking care of myself
Like I should
cause not one thing
Can bring me down
Nothing in this world gonna turn me round...
Now the day is turning into night
And everything is still going right
Theres no way you can stop me this time
Or break this spirit of mine
Like the stars above Im gonna shine
Anything I want will be mine
Tonight Im gonna have a good time
Call a few friends of mine
cause Im loving life
And tonights for feeling...
(repeat Chorus)

"Golden" by Jill Scott, which, along with some very empowering lyrics, has a catchy chorus that goes, "I'm living my life like it's golden, living my life like it's golden, golden!", all powered through by Jill's great voice. How can I not want to take on the world?

There are so many great songs, but I don't think anyone has mentioned "If my friends could see me now" from Sweet Charity. It makes me want to sing it out loud and strut my stuff.
Also, "You Can Do It" by Ice Cube is definitely one of my power songs.

Thanks for reminding me of the power of positive thinking...I'm finding myself in a slump lately, with really no reason for it. I've been through tougher times and was wondering why I'm having such a hard time now. After your suggestion of "Find Your Song" I dug out my old song that got me through a difficult divorce a few years ago. (though which divorces aren't difficult?...) I used to listen to it while on my long, mind-clearing, stress-reducing runs. The song is "Happy Face" by Destiny's Child. It does amazing things for me and maybe others will find inspiration from it.

Mustang Sally . It took me about 2 years to find & rekindle my 'inner power center' following my divorce. One night I was out dancing with my sisters and this song came on and I spontaneously proclaimed it my theme song. The song made me feel back to my old sassy and strong self. I truly feel unstoppable when I hear it. To this day, my friends and family request this song for me at wedding dances and celebrate my rebirth by forming a circle around me on the dance floor!

Ok, I have a 7 year old, so most of the songs that stick in my head these days are from his shows. With that being said, when I am feeling like I just can't take it any more, I sing "It is the best day ever!" by Sponge Bob and "I'm a goofy goober" also by Sponge Bob and Patrick. I have several different songs including "Lose Yourself" by Eminem and "No More Drama" by Mary J Blidge. Most house music gets me going as well.

But the other day, I was having a particularly frustrating day and ran across my friend's Best of Gladys Knight and the Pips CD. I popped in "My Imagination" and that was my theme for the day!

"I really got to use,
My Imagination,
To think of a reason,
To keep on keeping on.
Got to make the best of,
A bad situation,
Ever since that day that I found out that you were gone."

And that baseline and the horn section! I dare you to not bang on your dashboard while listening to this!

"Let's get it started", by the Black Eyed Peas is my daughter and I's favorite song to sing in the van, when we start getting tired. We live an hour from Phoenix and sometimes when driving we get sleepy, but when when we put this song on, we sing at the top of our voices and she dances around in the seat. It lifts our spirits and helps break-up the monotony.

If I'm having a bad day all I need to hear is the beginning of "Can't do a Thing (to Stop Me)" by Chris Isaak. I'm immediately transported to a hammock on a quiet beach with an icy cold drink. (and Chris Isaak of course).

Sorry, that song "She's in Love With the Boy" is by Trisha Yearwood.

HeatherOct 31, 2007 at 04:07 PM

My favorite song to listen to when I'm feeling down is "She's in Love With the Boy" beacuse it reminds me so much of me and my husband when we were dating, right down to the "Beat up Chevy Truck." It reminds me of the good time sthat we shared together and puts me in a better mood.

My girls and I have the song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Madonna for our theme song. Rayne, 6 and Skyler, 4 sing it loudly each time they hear it on the radio. It really pumps us up on our way out the door in the AM.

AnnetteOct 31, 2007 at 10:11 AM

"Werewolves of London" - sounds strange, but my husband and I love it. When ever one of us hears it on the radio, we call the other one and we both howl along.

GrandKatOct 29, 2007 at 09:06 AM

I have to turn up the volumn and sing as loud as I can to "My Girl". Then I pretend that my husband is home with me (not at work!) and is dancing with me slowly and singing the song to me softly into my ear. Like we used to when we were dating!

I'm the Mom of a child with autism, and my greatest challenge in life is trying to draw him out of himself and into our world. "Circles" by the Captain and Tennille is my theme. When it was popular when I was a child, it had just seemed to me like a cutesy, cleverly worded love song; but it has taken on a much more profound meaning to me now...If you love someone who has autism, I encourage you to look up the lyrics!

My song is "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy. I have always kept this song in the back of my mind and sing it in my head at least once a day. I don't sing out loud as I would clear the neighbourhood.

AnitaApr 18, 2007 at 08:19 PM

"Defying Gravity" from Wicked! Every time I hear it, it never fails to make me happy, especially the "Nobody is ever gonna bring me down"

SherryApr 18, 2007 at 08:06 PM

High School Never Ends by Bowling for Soup! Even though the song is about having to endure the same crud you do in high school for your whole life, its upbeat and I like the idea of keeping my close friends forever.

ValerieApr 18, 2007 at 07:57 PM

I a bit silly but this song never fails for me- For Fruits Basket! The opening theme for Fruits Basket!

patty kielbasinskiApr 15, 2007 at 10:45 PM

For over 30 years now the song that really gets me going is Boston's "More than a Feeling". What an incredible loss the death of Brad Delp (Boston's Lead singer) has been.

Tina Turner "Simply The Best"

"it's not up to you" by Bjork. It has been a really good song for me, especially since I have seizures and I'm figuring out that I simply can't accomplish all that I set out to do. I can't be that perfect woman.

Also, "swan dive" by Ani DiFranco. It shows such a sense of daring and joy. Just what I need to swing myself back into life.

"I believe I can Fly" loved it in "An Officer and a Gentleman" but I don't remember who song that version and R. Kelly does it well also! THis was a great idea! I was just trying to remember some other great inspirational songs to make me a play list and here they are! Love you Real Simple!

I listened to "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead just before going in front of an all-Chief interview board for a promotion in the Police Department I work for... I nailed the interview and got the promotion (over several qualified men who totally discounted me)! That song pumped me right up and I sing it loud whenever I need a push, it always has the same effect.

"...we're puttin ourselves together, we're polishin up our act...if you've ever been held down before, I know you refuse to be held down anymore, well, don't you let nothin nothin stand in your way, I want ya to listen listen to every word I say...Ain't no Stoppin us NOW, we're on the move!..."

SkD, Calgary, ABMar 14, 2007 at 05:57 PM

The lyrics are *not* inspiring, but nothing makes me "think I can dance" like Michael Jackson's "THRILLER". For pure determination, the theme song from "ROCKY" (aka Gonna Fly Now) and as an encouragement, "GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS."

yobyMar 10, 2007 at 09:55 PM

Jonatha Brooke's I'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE'. After beating cancer twice in seven years, the chorus totally moves me."I'll take it from here/I'll succeed or I will fail but I will decide/I'll take it from here/Catch my breath and count to ten and/Open my eyes../Again.

Also love...

Susan Tedeschi's version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice"
"Land of Hope and Dreams" -- Bruce Springsteen
"We Are the Wave" -- Harry Bellafonte (on An Evening with Harry Bellafonte and Friends)
"Keep On the Sunny Side of Life" --The Whites (on the soundtrack of "O Brother, Where Art Thou")

"Mary Ellen Carter," by the late Canadian singer Stan Rogers, is the story of a ship's crew's attempts to bring her up from 60' of water after the owners said it wasn't worth it to raise her. Twice when I was at a very low ebb, I heard this on the radio. Both times it got me back on my feet, and I think of it often:

"Rise again, rise again
Though your heart it be broken
And life about to end,
No matter what you've lost be it a home, a love, a
friend,
Like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again."

It never fails.

Garth Brooks: Standing Outside the Fire! This song has always gotten me pumped! I have played it during times of my life when I am making major decisions and I blast it before I have to do something that requires confidence! The live version really rocks!

Livin' on a Prayer-Bon Jovi
This is going to sound silly but I grew up listening to him and his music-Everytime I hear his music it takes me back to being 17 and carefree! Every time he comes around me and the girls go and see him and feel young all over again!

Ashley OFeb 5, 2007 at 11:11 AM

It may be materialistic of me, but I don't care. :) Every time I hear "Money" by Pink Floyd I have to stop and dance and admire the band's skill.

I just love the song "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. Not only is it one of those amazing songs to sing along with, the lyrics remind me to live my life on my terms and to never ever settle.

Curly SueJan 31, 2007 at 06:22 PM

The Joker by the Steve Miller band is the song that first got me hooked on classic rock 15 years ago - it's so sexy and empowering for those non-comforists out there moving to the beat of our own drum and internal drummer!

Ashley P.Jan 31, 2007 at 05:37 PM

I'm currently bobbing my head to The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" - this song always makes me so happy. I'm also a big fan of "Like It Like That" and "Juicy" by Better than Ezra - those two make me dance like a fool.

Judith WaitsJan 31, 2007 at 11:52 AM

I love "How You Ever Gonna Know?" by Garth Brooks. I listen to it every morning. It makes me think about how we can never know what we can achieve if we don't take chances.

"Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flats almost tells the story of my life with my husband. . . I listen to that every day, too.

KJan 31, 2007 at 09:43 AM

"Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen... always the source of a car-rocking sing-along. The sight of your performance might even make the day of the guy stuck in traffic next to you.

Britt RodgersJan 30, 2007 at 10:44 PM

I have quite a few songs that can get me up and pumped. A couple I thought of when I read the article were: "Wild Boys" by Duran Duran and the ENTIRE "Xanadu" soundtrack. I think a large part of music to get you going has to do with the cheese factor.

JulieJan 30, 2007 at 09:58 PM

Dixie Chicks "I Hope"

Whenever I get discouraged with hearing too much negatives at work or in the news or just going through the day, this song picks me up. It reminds me to hope for better, greater things, and to teach my children to do the same.

Cindy WeaverJan 30, 2007 at 06:40 PM

You're My Inspiration" by Chicago is the one I love to sing, helps me re-focus on the important people in my life.

Indigo Girls "Closer to Fine"

QuesjaneeJan 30, 2007 at 04:59 PM

My theme song is Inda Arie's "I am not my hair". I am the only black person in my department, among the few in my organization. If/when I change my hairstyle, it is a major thing for the others at my workplace. They feel free to comment about it positively and negatively. Usually it's okay, but my boss is a real son of a gun and secretly I scream the lyrics to the song at him when he looks and speaks so condescendingly at me. I have found that it helps me in other areas of life as well. Just a few words, "I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations, no. I am not my hair, I am not this skin. I am the soul that lives within."

Wendy Van SickleJan 30, 2007 at 02:35 PM

Whenever I feel my internal fears holding me back, I chide myself with a spirited course of "Don't Rain on My Parade" from FUNNY GIRL. I just remember Barbra Streisand in that movie, all gussied up, about to board a train and deciding, against all reasonable wisdom, to take a taxi down to the harbor to join Nicky Arnstein on a cruise to Europe. She begins small, almost sneering the first words of the song... "DON'T tell me not to live, I've simply got TO, if someone takes a s
