You don’t need to run to your doctor at the first sign of a cold or flu. But certain symptoms warrant a visit or at least a phone call.

  • A high fever that’s accompanied by marked dizziness or a stiff neck.
  • Trouble breathing, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
  • Severe facial pain or pressure behind the eyes, plus congestion.
  • A sore throat without a runny nose or a cough.
  • Cold symptoms — headache, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and sinus pressure — that last longer than about 10 days.
