Definition: Literally, “a foot on the ground.” Used to describe a secondary home.
Usage: Sherry was thinking of renting a pied-à-terre in the city to break up her long commute a few days a week.

Auld Lang Syne (old lang ZYNE); Scottish
Definition: The good old times; also the title of a Scottish song popularly sung just after ringing in the New Year.
Usage: “Should auld acquaintance be forgot…for auld lang syne."

Trompe L’Oeil (tromp LOY); French
Definition: Optical illusion; something that “cheats the eye."
Usage: The mirage of a lake in the desert was merely a trompe l’oeil for the thirsty traveler.
